Summer Slime Rockets

I had planned on staying dry yesterday, and doing some much needed writing for the site. Instead I found my self on the banks of the Upper Rogue during the afternoon chasing after summer steelhead.

I’ve never fished during the flies only season on the Upper Rogue as I’m usually hunting or away at school. This year, however, I’ve made a few trips, but had yet to hook my first steelhead on a fly. That all changed for the better yesterday, and I’m glad I decided not to sit at home…

I ended up going 2-2 in only an hour and a half of fishing, with one hatchery keeper, and one native released. The summer steelhead didn’t disappoint and both provided multiple aerial displays. They definitely proved why they are my favorite fish to chase.

The salmon are in full spawning mode which has the steelhead keying in on the eggs. Single egg patterns, and colored bead-head ugly bugs are the top producers right now. If you don’t own a fly rod you are still able to fish with the flies under a float. You may use any type of rod and reel provided there are no additional weights or attachments used except for the float.

If you’re not wanting to make the trek over to the coast right now, give the Upper Rogue a try. You might just find a summer slime rocket on the end of your line…
