A Little Bit of Summer From the Cold

It’s been nothing but cold and dry down here in Southern Oregon for the entire month. Despite the lack of precipitation, the late summer run fishing continues to hold on strong on the Upper Rogue.

Yesterday morning started out hot with hooking, and subsequently long distance releasing, a fish on my first cast. I followed that up 10 casts later with the first fish to the bank.

Check out the deformed mouth…

After that things slowed down and I moved on to the next hole. Right after i got there a boat came down into the hole, so I decided to let them fish it for a little bit while I changed from drift fishing to float fishing. It didn’t take long before the guides younger client hooked into his very first steelhead ever.

As they were dealing with their fish it was my turn to get into the action, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked up. This steelhead thought it was still August and put on an aerial display for everyone.

I ended the day going 2-3 after only a couple hours of fishing. 2 of the steelhead took XFactor Tackle mini egg clusters in peach while drift fishing, and the last one took the same egg cluster under a float. Peach is an excellent color right now as the silvers are spawning, and the steelhead are keying in on the eggs.
