Rain, sun, snow, and hail…this years Black Bird 5000 Fishing Derby had it all. The weather system that moved in on Friday threw everything it could at anglers participating in the derby, but even with fishing being slower than normal, the big trout were still biting.
Our boat experienced the slowest fishing we’ve ever had at the lake. We weren’t very mobile, as we didn’t have a motor, but that hasn’t stopped us in the past. However, on Saturday we just couldn’t find a consistent bite. Luckily my fiance Jacque had the lucky touch, and put our largest fish of the day in the boat. We thought the fat 17 1/2 incher may give us a chance at placing in the money with the slow fishing, but bigger fish just kept being weighed in.
After all the dust had settled, there were three trout that stood out from the rest of the pack. The first place winner weighed in at 5lbs 15oz and was caught by Sarah Blinkhorn on a worm under a bobber. Second place was 5lbs 6oz caught by Terry Kuts, and third place weighed in at 5lbs 2oz caught by Kelly Hillburn. To place in the money at 30th place took 2lbs 15oz. The youth division was won by Bryson Kievit with a 2lb 7oz fish. You can find a full list of the results HERE.
A big thanks goes out to Black Bird Shopping Center and Diamond Lake Resort for hosting this event.
