Black Bird 5000 Fishing Derby 2012

It’s that time of year again. The annual Black Bird 5000 fishing derby is this Saturday at Diamond Lake, and they’ve once again release a few tagged trout to make things interesting. There will be 5 trout swimming in the lake worth $100 each, and one that is worth $1000. These fish also don’t have to be caught during the derby, so if you’re lucky enough to catch one at any time this year, you can turn it into the Diamond Lake Resort for your payout.

Note that the 4th, 5th & 6th place payouts are misprints.
Actual payouts are: 4th – $350 5th – $325 & 6th – $250

Fishing at Diamond Lake should be excellent this weekend. The midge hatch is almost over and the trout are on the bite once again. Both still fishing with dough baits and trolling small bits of worm or wooly buggers have been producing great catches. If things hold true to past years, it will take a 20″+ trout to place in the money. Anglers are reminded that the limit is 8 fish a day, but only one of those may be over 20 inches. Also don’t forget to bring the bug spray as the mosquitoes have started coming out in force.

Good luck to everyone that goes, and we’ll probably see you up there. Team Southern Oregon Fishing will be on the hunt for that winning fish.

  1. One small problem though……a very strong cold front is going to push in which will likely put the fish OFF the bite and contribute to some very tough fishing. Snow may even be falling at the lake on Saturday so anybody going should be ready for some VERY cold weather.
