Halloween isn’t just for the kids this year. If you’re lucky enough to have the day off, there’s some great first and last chance opportunities available. Here’s a look at what tomorrow brings for us in Southern Oregon.
Chetco – Now that we’ve finally received some rain this month, and there’s more in the 5 day forecast, the ODFW has decided to open the Chetco early for fall salmon and winter steelhead (source). The entire river will open tomorrow instead of the original Nov. 3rd opening. Unfortunately for anglers it’s looking like the rain is going to begin tonight, and send the river on the rise. Keep a close eye on the gauge, as you’ll want to hit it as it’s on the drop.
Upper Rogue – Tomorrow marks the last day of the flies only season above the old Gold Ray Dam site. Beginning on the 1st, anglers are once again allowed to use any artificial lure throughout the entire stretch, and bait above the Shady Cove boat ramp. The steelhead have seen nothing but flies for the last 2 months, and fishing is typically very good throughout the entire month of November. Anglers may also find a surprise coho or two as well. Most anglers will be hitting the stretch between the hatchery and Shady Cove due to the use of bait being allowed, however, don’t overlook the stretches below that. Back trolling plugs or casting spinners and spoons can be extremely effective.
High Mountain Trout – Both Diamond Lake and Howard Prairie have been fishing very well lately for fall trout. However, tomorrow marks the last day of the season for all of the high mountain lakes. If you’re wanting to sneak in one last trip, both lakes are good options.
Have a fun and safe Halloween.
