With Diamond Lake now being open year round, it provides an excellent opportunity to ice fish for the large trout that live in Southern Oregon’s premiere trout destination. With most of the mountain lakes closed during the winter, there has never been a lot of opportunity for those wanting to try to catch a trout through the ice. Due to the lack of experience the ODFW wants to make sure everyone is able to partake in the activity safely. To do this they are holding a family ice fishing workshop on Saturday March 8th.

The ODFW and Diamond Lake Resort are inviting you and your entire family to Diamond Lake to show you how to ice fish for trout. They will be teaching you all of the basics including what gear to use, what knots to tie, how to care for your catch, and how to fish safely on the ice. All the equipment needed will be provided, however, you will need to bring your own lunch.

Fishing hasn’t been spectacular this year, but there are trout being caught, including a 24 incher last weekend. Even if fishing is slow there will be plenty of snow for the kids to play in.

The cost of the workshop is $52 per adult and $12 per child under age 18. For more information, and to register, visit the Introduction to Family Ice Fishing Website.
